The book is about a kid named Rudi who is drafted into the U. Marine Corps to fight in the Vietnam War. When he gets to Vietnam, he turns out to be a very good soldier and is favored among the higher ranks. He makes several friends and even likes being a soldier. Most of his squad mates just want to get their tour of duty over with. The book is in no way a stereotypical novel about a man who hates war and is desperately trying to survive in battle, it is much more interesting then that. It is an action-packed novel about a kid that has finally found a place where he feels he belongs.
Rudi, Morris, Beck and Ivan were best friends in high school. They made a pact that if one did it, they all did it. When Rudi was drafted into the Vietnam War the other three joined up also. Being in the Marines Rudi was the first to admit that he was the weakest one there. He always had his friends to help him out and pull him through when he was home and in high school but in Vietnam that was not going to happen so Rudi had to learn how to cope. What Rudi did learn was that he was exceptional at following orders. So follow orders he did.
