Until fairly recently, I have to confess that my familiarity with Julia Child was pretty minimal. I vaguely recall seeing snippets of the French Chef on PBS you can watch some of the episodes here , and when Dan Aykroyd lampooned Julia on Saturday Night Live, I sort of got it, but that was about the extent of my exposure. This prompted me to want to learn more, so I picked up My Life in France.

I am starting my first book club comprised of eight women all empty nesters. I would like a recommendation for a book and the accompanying recipes and discussions questions to use as guidelines. The book can be current of a classic, fiction or non-fiction. All suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.

Julie has such a remarkable relationship with Julia Child, despite never having met her. What did you think of the relationship that Julie built in her mind? Otherwise, though, she does seem to be largely imagining someone without her own weaknesses and failings.
Wendy and I have not yet had any discussions about this selection so I am interested in what she has to say about it. I have to say I was rather disappointed in this book. Glad to have read it but not really one I will recommend. It was all the belly-aching and depressing comments and finding so many things wrong with life rather than finding fulfillment in achievement and a loving husband. Pretty sad. The premise of the book is based on a blog that Julie Powell wrote during a single year.
