Best Children's Books About Lightning and Thunder

Once upon a time my daughter Lillie was terrified of thunderstorms she still doesn't like them much. One night after feebly trying to calm her and assure her that it was all just noise, I started thinking about what could make a spring storm less scary. I had been making up bedtime stories for my kids for some time, featuring a cast of characters that included an elf named Widget and his best friend Wobble, a penguin. I used them to create a frame around the story of a friendship between Thunder and Lightning. They were also best friends, and played with such fervor and fun that they shook the sky.

It was such a hot, sunny day, but now the skies have darkened to bluish-gray. Off in the distance, you hear a soft rumble of thunder. Maybe it will pass, you hope. But not this time. Fat raindrops almost sizzle as they hit the hot sidewalk. More rain and wind slashes at the windows.
