Help children learn to read with Usborne Very First Reading

The Lexile system is the most widely-used measure of readability around the world. Since January , a growing number of children in the UK have had their Lexile level assessed in school. They receive the results as a measure, [number]L, which can be used to find books that they will enjoy at an appropriate level of difficulty, supporting reluctant readers and stretching more confident ones. For instance, a child with Lexile level L will find books at level L relatively easy to read, and books at level L a little more challenging but still accessible. For best reading progress, books from points below to to 50 points above your child's level are recommended. You can download lists of all Usborne Lexiled books using the links on this page, or find other measures using the Quick Book Search on the Lexile Framework website, fab.

First Reading Level 1

Today I am very excited to bring you a new post in a monthly series called Side Hustle Showcase about different opportunities to make a little extra money! Whether you want a few more dollars to pay down debt, send the kids to camp, or get yourself a massage this series will let you know what it is like to pursue different side hustles. I am not an Usborne consultant, but we own many of their books and I have surveyed over 20 Usborne consultants who generously accepted my invitation to tell their stories. The company has over 1, titles to choose from including traditional books, sticker books, 3D cut-out books, and more. There are no monthly sales minimums. The consultant brings some books to showcase but does not have to supply inventory for participants to purchase. Guests order their books through Usborne and have them delivered directly to their home.

Usborne Very First Reading has been developed to offer the best possible support for teaching children to read, both in schools and at home. The series is based on the principles of synthetic phonics but also provides effective support for non-phonics-based programs. From Book 13 - The monster diner. Letters and Sounds consists of six phases and is designed to be used from pre-kindergarten through second grade. The six phases become progressively more difficult as they target pre-reading and other reading skills. From Book 4 - Dog diary. Download our overview of the framework PDF which includes the material covered in each book.

Children are assessed to determine their reading ability, and can then choose from a range of recommended titles at their reading level. Once they have finished a book, they complete a simple quiz to check that they have read and understood it, and then are given a further list of recommended titles to choose from. Children can build their reading skills and stamina, and are not put off by books that are too basic or too demanding for them. They also have fun completing quizzes and earning points along the way towards individual or class targets. Struggling readers are well supported, and high achievers are encouraged to read books that really engage and challenge them. Above all, children are highly motivated and inspired by successful reading. To help you choose a book that's suited to your child's reading level, Usborne support a number of reading level systems.

Choose a Reading Programme category

Beautifully produced, with lively writing and fabulous illustrations, the books are designed to capture the imagination and build the confidence of beginner readers, and to motivate and inspire children who find reading difficult or dull. The programme has been developed in consultation with Alison Kelly, a leading expert in the teaching of reading, who helped to draw up the eight-level framework and reads every title before publication. Non-fiction titles also draw on the expertise of specialists in the relevant areas. A number of these tie in with key topics in the UK National Curriculum, especially for history. Usborne Very First Reading is an exciting series of books for children who are just starting to learn to read. They are part of a well-researched framework, and are designed to be shared and enjoyed with an adult.
