Ayi Kwei Armah is probably the most distinguished African writer in terms of stylistics. He provides brave and well-thought-out criticism of his society, which requires the reader to react. From a young age, Ama Ata Aidoo has demonstrated the ability to write expertly with poetry, prose and drama. She seamlessly switches between these genres to whichever she feels would allow her to express her ideas best. Her award-winning novel, Changes is a fierce piece of fiction that exposes people to the different facets of Ghanaian women.
Over the seven decades of her career, Ghanaian writer Ama Ata Aidoo has published award-winning novels, plays, short stories, children's books, and poetry, and influenced generations of African women writers. Her storytelling nurtured mine. Her worldview enlarged and validated mine. In further testament to her influence, the author was the subject of the excellent documentary film, The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo , directed by Yaba Badoe. In Badoe's documentary, the author, in her traditional head wrap, dangly earrings, and Chanel sunglasses, remembers her mother telling her stories in the early hours of the morning during her childhood. Her interest in storytelling was also influenced by the semi-professional storyteller who lived in her village.

Aidoo began to write seriously while an honours student at the University of Ghana B. She won early recognition with a problem play , The Dilemma of a Ghost , in which a Ghanaian student returning home brings his African American wife into the traditional culture and the extended family that he now finds restrictive. Aidoo herself won a fellowship to Stanford University in California, returned to teach at Cape Coast , Ghana —82 , and subsequently accepted various visiting professorships in the United States and Kenya. In No Sweetness Here , a collection of short stories, Aidoo exercised the oral element of storytelling, writing tales that are meant to be read aloud. These stories and Anowa , another problem play, are concerned with Western influences on the role of women and on the individual in a communal society.
She was the Minister of Education under the Jerry Rawlings administration. In , she established the Mbaasem Foundation to promote and support the work of African women writers. Her grandfather was murdered by neocolonialists, and the tragedy, in turn, brought her father's attention to the importance of educating the children and families of the village on the history and events of the era. This led him to open up the first school in their village and influenced Aidoo to attend the Wesley Girls Highschool where she first decided she wanted to be a writer. After high school, she enrolled at the University of Ghana , Legon where she obtained a degree in Bachelor of Arts in English and also wrote her first play, The Dilemma of a Ghost , in
