It was founded in by Alexander Cameron Rutherford ,  the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory ,  its first president. Its enabling legislation is the Post-secondary Learning Act. The university comprises four campuses in Edmonton, the Augustana Campus in Camrose, and a staff centre in downtown Calgary. The original north campus consists of buildings covering 50 city blocks on the south rim of the North Saskatchewan River valley , directly across from downtown Edmonton. The University of Alberta is a major economic driver in Alberta.

The facility contains records of many notable individuals and organizations relating to Alberta and federal politics, the oilsands, theatre, education and Western settlement. RCRF also houses material of continuing administrative, legal or historical value including academic and administrative records, U of A publications and the private papers of faculty, including founding president Henry Marshall Tory, staff, students, alumni and various university-related organizations. The U of A has been collecting and storing its own records—and more—since it began in , and the new building carries on that tradition. They had outgrown the space, Shores said. And in a new digitization centre with five scanning machines, archivists will work to transfer paper materials into electronic form, making them accessible to the world.
